Jordan was a bridesmaid at one of my all-time favorite weddings, the kick starter to my Texas portfolio. These girls, y’all. They felt like friends by the end of the evening. They were ALL close to each other, and ALL so much fun. Their wedding party seriously made the day. So when Jordan remembered me from Holly’s wedding and reached out, I threw up all the hand emojis and said “yes please!”.

Jordan and Alex were in town for her roommate’s engagement (’tis the season!) so we gathered the next morning, on one of Austin’s first chilly mornings, at the beautiful McKinney Falls State Park. They both came into the shoot saying “we’ll be so awkward, just tell us what to do…” and before I even got my camera ready and my settings correct, they were cuddling and laughing together and I just began snapping. So NOT awkward!

I can’t wait for their Dallas wedding next Spring, and to see all the familiar faces again from last spring!

This was one of those weddings where you think “this is why I shoot weddings, this is why I’m here, the is why I want to use this gift to help others and provide memories to those I love”.

Jordan reached out to me about a month before their wedding, their photographer was no longer able to be there, and he wondered if I was available “by chance”. I was, and it didn’t take much thinking or contemplating before I said, of course I’ll be there.

We met Jordan and Michelle through mutual friends upon our arrival to Austin last year, at a Friendsgiving, so knowing them I knew was going to be just a celebration of love, marriage, and friendships. And it was. They hosted 80 of their closest friends and family, from all over the country, at Bear Creek Retreat to a simple but perfect gathering. It was a dream seeing the two pledge their vows to each other under a beautiful oak tree, followed by a family-style sunset reception with market lights and long tables, Persian food, and tearful toasts.

I can’t wait to see you two continue growing and hope the example you hold as a couple touches so many lives in your future. Love to you, friends!

This being my first blog post since the Cubs have won the World Series, I feel I must begin and document this by saying (and I know Bret and Alexis would agree) “Go Cubs Go!”

Alexis originally reached out to me for their October wedding, stating that she was currently living in Dallas, but that she and her fiance are from Chicago and will be getting married there. So I knew from the start it was a match made in wedding heaven. About 9 months before their wedding, we met up for tacos at my favorite place in Austin, Radio. We gave hugs, got to know each other, and talked wedding details. And I left feeling so excited and anxious for the Texas summer to pass, and Chicago’s beautiful fall to arrive.

And it did. And it rained. But it didn’t matter. No one’s spirits were down, everyone was sweet, excited, and encouraging. Alexis was cool and calm as we talked through back up locations, and both of them were just excited to marry each other. No matter the weather. Luckily, the girls got ready at the beautiful Sheraton Grand Hotel, which offered many locations for indoors shots while the rain stopped, and provided us with the perfect locations for Bret and Alexis’ first look.

And the day continued to be just as wonderful, touring Chicago’s greatest backdrops. Covered of course. And ending at one of the tallest skyscrapers in the city, with 360 views that we all took iPhone snaps of, The Mid America Club.

I truly can’t express my gratitude to you both, for your kindness and contagious personalities. I could tell that every single guest at your wedding adored you both and loved being there to support your marriage. xo

This shoot, where to begin…

I guess it could start with us, moving to Austin last year, me second shooting here and there with a couple rad Austin wedding photographers realizing “Oh my, I need to step up my game with these Texas, hill country weddings in my portfolio. I got nothin” And so, last January, a Pinterest page was born starting with our lavender, purple, and slate color palette.

My first connection was through a dear coworker who got married last July. Her florist and planner was Twyla with Remi & Gold, and she agreed to meet me for a glass of red at Henri’s. It was an instant hit between us and this girl is CONNECTED in the Austin wedding industry. After our meeting we’d selected a time of year, vision, and list of vendors to begin reaching out to. From there, it was emails, emails, calls, emails. Every person I connect with was 100% on board and pumped for the vision we’d made.

Everything and everyone had fallen into place but the venue. At first I was searching only lavender fields, ‘cuz hello, so pretty. Then a Facebook ad came up for “Austin’s best new venues” and so I clicked, and there is it was. I fell in love with Addison Grove‘s clean white site, wildflower field, longhorns, and oak trees. Matt immediately wrote back to my inquiry, and even had a truck that we could use for pick up and drop off of our rentals. It was all happening.

The next few months were a lot of check in’s, final details, mock up reviews, logistics, and a timeline. And then it all came together on that perfectly cloudy day last May. Not only am I happy to have this as a portfolio piece and added experience designing and managing a shoot, but it was featured on Every Last Detail recently so I also hope it brings inspiration to brides everywhere. Thank you to everyone for your support and enthusiasm to help on this shoot! I truly couldn’t have done it without your skills and encouragement. xo

Twyla, with Remi & Gold, AKA my right-hand gal on this shoot. I knew from the minute I met her we’d be a good team and she was everything I needed to stay sane and execute this shoot. I truly cannot say enough about her floral and tablescape designs using Birch & Brass‘ table, chairs, linens and place settings. Everything I shot had her magic touch to it. If you are ever looking for someone to support your wedding day, or want to know the latest hot spot in Austin, she’s your girl.

All of our desserts were handmade by Candace with Simply Delicious Custom Cakes, another Brides of Austin vendor. I had a conversation with Candace on the phone in which she immediately proposed the lavender honey shortbread and mini donuts with lavender icing. And, minutes before the shoot, she found this PERFECT dresser to showcase her desserts. Total clutch move and just the sweetest (pun!) girl you can imagine.

Oh Little Fox‘s brilliant cocktail recipe, the Lavender French 75, paired with Remi & Gold‘s florals, her mother’s tray and vintage lavender handkerchief. See the full recipe on Every Last Detail.

Liberty Riggs is in Tuesdays Together with me and jumped at the idea of teaming up with the invitation set. She was on it. From the first mood board to the execution. You can’t see it very well in the picture, but there is a graphic of the barn as the envelope liner. Brilliant.

And finally, our models and their beautiful look. Kristen and Brendan go to our church and, upon meeting Kristen at our Friendsgiving last year, I knew I had to have her for a shoot. They got married a few years ago and were excited (and a tad nervous!) to be in front of the camera again, but couldn’t have been more onboard and perfect. Lauren with Lola Beauty did Kristen’s flawless hair and make up and Shelbi of Moonlight & Moss custom designed and made the dress, the incredible two-piece grey tulle dress. A dress I couldn’t have dreamed up with all the research, instagram feeds, or pinterest pages in the world.

Chandler and Amy are two of our dearest friends, and they’re getting married this February at the amazing Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan. Chandler’s home state and obsession.

While I’ll be stepping aside for their wedding to support day-of coordination, my girl Jenna with Jenna Marie Photography will be taking the reigns in capturing their beautiful winter wedding day. And my husband Luke will be standing as a groomsman next to Chandler in support of their vows and covenant to each other in marriage. I can’t wait for that day, can’t wait for the tears and emotion we’ll all be experiencing, and seeing all of our efforts and butterflies come together that day.

For their engagement session (my wedding gift to them), we headed to Amy’s hood, Pilsen. The “next great Chicago neighborhood”, or so they say. We started on the 18th Street bridge, overlooking one of the more unique or untapped skyline views of the city where we all met, where we did life together. From there, we walked the river in Ping Tom Park. Lined with industrial buildings, bridges, and willow trees. It was the perfect backdrop for their session, and where Amy does her 3-mile weekly runs. So impressive…

Love you two! xx

I haven’t blogged anything person in awhile. For many reasons. Many of which will be addressed in this blog post…

Our summer was silly. It was hectic, lonely at times, and something we don’t regret, but will never do again. We spent our summer mostly apart.

As most of you know, Luke (my hub) is in grad school at Texas State down here in Austin. Before that, he was a tennis pro in Chicago, paying his way through a previous masters degree. When his spring semester was coming to a close last May, we made the difficult decision for him to go back to Chicago to work at his country club again from mid-May to mid-August. Make an extra buck to put towards savings. People don’t play tennis in the summer here, or at least pay money for it. So, back north my hubby went while I held down the fort, took care of our pup, and traveled my life away…

Let’s recap:

May

  • 16th: execute a styled shoot I have been dreaming about since the winter, here in Austin, with the greatest set of vendors I could have asked for. It’s just been picked up by Every Last Detail and I can’t wait to share when it’s live.
  • 17th: shoot my first boudoir session, and I’m instantly hooked.
  • 19-22nd: my Aunt Robyn comes to town and we run around Austin and Waco, visiting Chip and Johanne’s Magnolia Market. I was (admittingly) more impressed than I expected!
  • 23rd: Luke takes off for Chicago, let’s begin the tears and longest summer ever.

June

  • 2-6th: travel to Montana with Cassie Eldridge, and fulfill a goal of shooting a wedding and exploring Glacier National Park, Idaho, and Washington. It was a dream come true and I’m forever grateful for Cassie trusting me to be her partner that trip. Love you girl.
  • 10-12th: Luke is home! And we celebrated his 32nd birthday to the max with river floating, food trucks, and dinner with our closest Austinites.
  • 17-19th: back in Chicago to see friends, family, my hubby, second shoot again for Cassie, and surprise my dad for Father’s Day.

July

  • 1-10th: home for the 4th of July. Home, Winona Lake home. Nowhere else I’d rather be celebrating the greatest holiday. We started the trip in Indianapolis celebrating Luke’s grandparents 90th birthdays, did a day trip to Chicago to celebrate our dear Megan’s wedding, then ended our week on the lake, grilling out, playing cornhole, day drinking. The greatest Midwest tour.
  • July 9th: shoot a wedding in Chicago I’ll never forget. Shooting a couple who became friends. Kim and Dima’s wedding represented everything I love about weddings. Capturing days that represent the two of them, their families and traditions, and at one of the prettiest venues to date.
  • 22-24th: visit Boston for a Haddad family reunion!
  • 29-30th: back to Chicago to assist a friend, see my hubby again, and host my bests’ wedding shower at ZED451. Yum.

August

  • 11-14th: fly out to Orlando to celebrate my SIL’s 30th birthday!! It brought all the poolside drinks, cooking, dinners out, and girl time.
  • 18th: officially calling Austin our home for one year
  • 19th: LUKE IS HOME!

So there’s our summer, I wish I could say our travel for the year is over but alas. We’ve already hit up Vegas this month, San Francisco for a work trip, San Antonio for a little anniversary getaway, and I’m off to to Chi for Bret and Alexis’ wedding today!

This season of our life is exhilarating, and vis-à-vis exhausting, but we’re in a mode of “do it now” and boy are we! To my full time job, thank you for being so flexible. To my family, thank you for (trying to!) keep up and encouraging us during a tough summer. To our Chicago friends, thank you for hosting us and loving on us. To our Austin friends, thank you for keeping me company!
